Book Review: Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear

This book is chock full of ideas you can use with your clients – and yourself – to support you in the behaviors that make a difference.

I live the idea of habit stacking and linking new habits to established ones.

I listened to the audible version and plan to listen again and get the Kindle version so I can take out quotes.

Blood Flow Restriction Resistance Exercise – December 13, 2019

Blood Flow Restriction Resistance Exercise

Have you heard of blood flow resistance (BFR) exercise? Sounds either kinky or dangerous, right? I first learned about this in a conversation with Dr. Joe Mercola when I sat near him at lunch at a mastermind meeting. He was raving about the results, especially in elderly or frail people who can’t do heavy weights.

To date, there have been over 200 research studies to prove this training methodology as an effective way to gain muscle, get lean and tone.

Here’s one: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6581774/

If you Google scholar search on BFR training, you will find lots of research on the topic.

BFR bands are a supplemental weightlifting tool that you can add to your existing routine that will allow you to lift less, but gain more muscle. BFR involves restricting venous blood flow from the muscle group that you are focusing on. The intent is to allow the venous blood to “pool” in the region of the body you’re training (i.e. upper or lower limbs). By doing this, the body will naturally trigger several hormone responses that cause an anabolic push to the large fast twitch muscles. Because they are the largest muscle group, they are the most likely to gain mass and tone quickly.

I bought a set of bands but haven’t started using them because they didn’t come with instructions. They are very inexpensive on Amazon. As I was cleaning out my inbox, I found that I’d been sent a 47-page instruction manual as a PDF.

I recommend you do a little research, try them on yourself and add to your toolbox of easy exercise strategies to teach clients. Here are the ones I bought:

Hair Loss and Hormones – December 6, 2019

Hair Loss and Hormones

Hair loss is a common complaint in women, and many are looking for the magic bullet supplement, lotion or potion to solve the problem. Most likely the solution lies in hormone balance, although nutrient imbalances can contribute as well.

In young women, consider birth control pills (BCPs). Many otherwise healthy women lose hair on BCPs. Another consideration is PCOS due to excess androgens – Testosterone, DHEA, DHT. DHT is dihydrotestosterone, an excess of which has been attributed to male pattern baldness.

The hormone issues most likely to cause hair loss in women are low estrogen, low thyroid or high androgens. Adrenal imbalance can contribute as well. If correcting these imbalances doesn’t stop the hair loss, check FSH and LH.

FSH in normal women is always 2-3 times higher than LH, except during ovulation when the LH “surge” brings it almost equal to FSH. If, at any time in the cycle, LH is significantly higher than FSH, especially if it’s double the FSH, one may likely have PCOS and the hair loss could be associated with that.

Sometimes the testosterone levels are ok but DHEA is high, which can be as bad or worse than high testosterone. Here’s an article with more information on the topic that you may find interesting:

The Power of Fasting

Fasting has been shown to have amazing health benefits. It’s how I healed my health issues in the stone age when I was in my 20’s!

The biggest issue I have with fasting as a therapeutic tool is the lack of enthusiasm that most people have around actually doing it!

Recent research has shown that we can achieve benefits similar to fasting by eating in a certain way, with particular ratios of macronutrients, and restricted calories.

I put together a Facebook challenge and we are guiding people through the process.

Here’s the guide we’re using.

Download Fasting with Food Guide

If you want to participate in the live challenge you can still get in and start a little late.

Experiment with it on yourself, so you are equipped to use this valuable tool with your clients!

The Power of YOUR PERSONAL Story – November 15, 2019

The Power of YOUR PERSONAL Story

Great learning from Bo Eason. Watch his video HERE. I just spent 3 full days with him.

Your story is a valuable tool for making connections whether on stage, one-to-one or in small groups.

Think of a situation in your life that was a pivotal moment for your health or career and take 5-7 minutes to write the details. Speak it out loud, preferably to another person, or speak it into a recorder. Shorten it to 3 minutes. Try again in 2 minutes, then 1 minute.

Then summarize the most important point into a sentence.

This sentence should provoke interest…people will want to know more.

For example, mine so far is: “A decision I made when I was 14 has dictated every action I’ve made from that moment forward.”

You can use your one sentence as a lead-in to a story at a live talk, on a webinar or in a conversation with a client or prospect.

You can use it to introduce a blog post, an email or other written correspondence.

Try it! Take about 20 minutes and you will be surprised by how empowered you feel afterwards.

Glucotypes

For years, I’ve taught the importance of post-prandial glucose mapping. In Insulin Resistance Mastery (IRSPT), I recommend teaching clients to test before a meal and every 15 minutes thereafter to map their peak and return to before meal status.

Continuous glucose meters make it easier to get compliance but require a prescription.

Finally, mainstream medicine recognizes the importance of what we’ve been doing for years. Check out this article on Glucotypes.

Book Review

According to “The Circadian Code,” by Sachin Panda, PhD, everything functions better when we “obey” the rhythms of nature. His book shares a lot of what we already know about circadian rhythms, cortisol, melatonin balance and light/dark cycles. He gives practical strategies for optimizing health by optimizing circadian rhythms. I am only part of the way through so far but this will become a tried and true for my suggested reading list.

Use it to provide background info for you to use in guiding your clients to optimize their habits.

Book Review

This book is filled with practical experiential processes you can share with clients to get them to activate the vagus nerve and get them into the healing parasympathetic state.

These processes are much more comfortable than gagging til you cry!
